Its longboard design gives you plenty of room for pedal slides and power strokes. Not so with the Perfect Balance Standard kick pedal from Sonor. One of the few complaints Sweetwater drummers have about linear kick pedals is that they can make it tough to generate enough power for heavy musical passages.
Coupled with the lightweight and virtually indestructible ballistic-fiber strap, the Perfect Balance Standard kick pedal is everything a technical drummer could ask for. This results in an almost perfectly linear stroke, which is killer for translating your playing dynamics. One of the coolest parts of this pedal’s mechanics is the integrated drive cam and beater hub, which brings down the mass. Nothing beats the intimate connection you get from a linear-drive kick pedal like the Perfect Balance Standard from Sonor. New for the Perfect Balance Standard is a redesigned heel plate bearing, which reduces play and further increases smoothness. Its strap-controlled round cam and beater hub mechanism provide a smooth, linear throw and lightning speed to pull off those Mayer-esque triples and heel-to-toe sixteenths. And what could be simpler than a noncollapsible design and a standard hoop clamp? The Sonor Perfect Balance Standard single bass pedal picks up where the Jojo Mayer signature model left off. Plus, it really is the coolest looking pedal I’ve ever seen.The original Perfect Balance kick pedal was all about simplicity and economy of motion. If you want a pedal that reacts to your foot technique the way sticks react to your hand technique, this is a pedal you need to try. It’s not for your metal band but that’s OK. I may be sticking with this pedal for a while. A close second to the Perfect Balance.īut overall, I’m back in love with the Perfect Balance. But it feels great, and fast doubles are pretty consistent. It is definitely not a heavy-duty type of pedal. It actually felt the closest to the Jojo pedal of any of these. The Jojo pedal had no problem with this at all. Very surprising that this pedal wouldn’t hold up under this motion. After a while, the pedal was almost falling off the drum completely. At higher speeds, with a greater foot slide up the pedal, the entire pedal would just move off of the hoop of the bass drum. I use a sliding motion that comes from a toe-heel movement (think Gadd and Weckl’s motion). But for fast doubles, the pedal seems inadequate. Now, let me tell you a little about the Yamaha Direct Drive and the older strap based FP 6110. There are some ideas i’m using that require two 32nd notes in a row on the bass drum at 100 to 116 bpm, and this pedal makes it feel almost effortless. In particular, fast doubles are very clean and consistent. It’s more funk, more progressive, more ghost notes, more double strokes, less pounding, more caressing. I’m working on a project that requires a lighter touch and more technique. Lately, a larger portion of my playing time is devoted music where my playing is more subtle. It just didn’t feel right for that application, but I may revisit this again. When I tried the Jojo pedal in that musical situation I was disappointed. Chain drive pedals that are supported by thick metal hardware are intended for that purpose.
For that heavy style of louder rock (think Dave Grohl circa Nirvana), my DW 5000 is ideal. The Perfect Balance pedal is not intended for that. Later, I started having some reservations because I began playing more heavy rock. Feathering the bass drum? The Jojo pedal is amazing for that. At the time I was deeply into playing jazz and only jazz. When I originally wrote about the Jojo pedal, I was over the moon.
